As part of the ongoing War on the Tea Party, the GOP establishment rallied its troops behind a closed-door meeting of senators. As the packed room listened, the Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell, stood up and referred to the treachery of Freedomworks and the Senate Conservatives Fund. The audacity of Freedomworks and other such groups in opposing the establishment GOP’s spending, cronyism, and collusion with the Democrats in the form of deficit spending outraged McConnell. In McConnell’s view, those who take money from Freedomworks and the Senate Conservatives Fund are traitors to the GOP, because he is the GOP. Others like him are the GOP.
The fact of the matter is that Mitch McConnell is only as relevant as his association with Rand Paul enables him to be. Paul has supplied him with a strategist and a plan to win in 2014, and outside of that association, Mitch McConnell could very well lose to Alison Lundergran Grimes next November. He lost when he endorsed Rand Paul’s primary opponent, and he’s been on the wrong side of every major issue over the past ten years. From the Patriot Act to TARP to amnesty, nothing McConnell has done is consistent with either conservatism or traditional Republican values and policy positions.
Glenn Beck’s call to Defund the GOP is an answer. If the GOP establishment is going to declare war on the Tea Party, then the grassroots of the Republican Party should return the favor and declare war on the GOP establishment. The time has come to drive out the vipers from the GOP, and to reclaim the party. We’re helping to take the fight to Lindsey Graham in South Carolina, and we’ve donated money to each of his primary opponents, while also holding a five city tour and a candidate forum in South Carolina.
The goal is to send a message to the GOP establishment by taking Lindsey Graham out. His approval ratings were in 70% range earlier this year, but we’ve helped drive Graham to 30%. Graham doesn’t poll above 50% against any of his challengers in a runoff poll. Our strategy of driving the message of Graham’s actual record is working.
